Artifically Sweetened drinks & Preterm delivery
In research just published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found daily intake of artificially sweetened soft drinks to be linked to preterm delivery. Preterm delivery (<37 weeks) is one of the major pregnancy complications and is a leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality.
Previous research has suggested that both artificially sweetened, and sugar sweetened soft drinks might be associated with hypertension, which is also a known risk factor for preterm delivery.
It would appear that the sweeteners, aspartame and acesulfame-K, primarily used in products from the major international brands, are potentially toxic. This is partly because aspartame is broken down into methanol which is then oxidized into formaldehyde and then into formic acid.
Formaldehyde is a colourless poisonous gas.
Do we really need to know any more than that to stop poisoning ourselves and our children?
